To the end of the world and back again

While in reality's sake it has not been long since my last posting, it seems like it has been a very long time. While on the one hand not much has happened since I last published any thoughts, on the other much has happened (among which one of the most exciting was dealing with my first injury at a youth event -- he was fine with the biggest problem, aside from the four staples in the head, being the disappointment that they canceled the helicopter because his injury was not that severe).

All other things aside, I come away from this hiatus in blogging with one very important lesson. While more and more it seems that the world is becoming automated and ones ability to use computers forms a direct link to ones success, it is important to distinguish between necessity and dependence.

I took this break, not only from blogging but also from facebook and most uses of search engines at the suggestion of a friend. This friend is one who is always there for me even when I am trying to fight with him and in return all he wants is for me to listen to him and spend some time with him. Both of which are hard to do while on the computer.

So I took a break and found out something interesting. For the first several days, the moment I walked into the house, my first urge was to go and sit down at the computer to see what others had blogged about, or who was signed on to facebook or what I could find out on google about so and so. As days and weeks pasted it had been nice to not have the need to use the computer. Yes, I still answered emails and personal communication but having some time away from the computer has been quite enjoyable.

I enjoy reading about other people, looking at their pictures and generally keeping up with their lives (I love people there is no getting around that!) and I am not suggesting that we all move out into the boondocks while returning to the technology of a hundred years ago. However, I challenge those who happen to wonder across these ramblings, how much time do you spend on the computer?

Are you trying to make me feel guilty for spending too much time on my computer? Anyway, thanks for the link to your blog, and here's the comment you asked for!
